He took the view that the president as a “steward of the people” should take whatever action necessary for the public good unless expressly forbidden by law or the Constitution. He brought new excitement and power to the presidency, as he briskly led Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms and an aggressive foreign policy. With the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, age 42, became the youngest president in the nation’s history. ![]()

Killadelphia, Vol. 1 by Rodney Barnes5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So I said in the back of my mind if I ever became a writer, and I could tell a story, I would put people of color primarily at the center of the narrative. You know, very rarely, we pop up every once in a while, but never as the main protagonist or the main antagonists. When I was a kid, I loved the Universal Monsters. Rodney Barnes: I'll try to make it simple. Where did the idea for Killadelphia come from? But I feel like vampires take on new significance in the story. I love your book, Killadelphia, there's just so many parts about it that I just find so enriching. Related: Buffy's Epic Vampire Slayer Return Has Begun At San Diego Comic-Con, we sat down with Killadelphia writer Rodney Barnes to talk about the genesis behind the series, the balancing act of creating a morally complicated vampire story, and where horror is headed next. ![]() Together, Jimmy and his father must reconcile their differences in order to save the city from the vampires' sinister plans, and from humanity's worst impulses. is a vampire, it is only the tip of the iceberg in a larger network of power governing Philadelphia, with Former President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, being at the top of it. In addition to this in situ cremation, the Romans also burned the body, collected the ashes, and then buried the remains in urns. One example is the popular use of the bustum, a funeral pyre constructed over a pit into which both the ashes from the burning material and the body were buried. It was a means of quickly releasing the spirit, rather than waiting for the body to decompose.Ĭremation practices along The Wall continued into the late Roman period and differed from those practiced elsewhere in Roman Britain. Not only an intriguing murder-mystery but an excellent piece of reportage. His richest and most complex work to date, it comes close to trascending genre fiction The Naming of the Dead is Ian Rankin's Exile on Main Street: dark, murky and less immediate than his other novels, but still zinging with wit and his inimitable gift for plot. Rankin's home provided him with a brilliant backdrop for a crime novel: Edinburgh during the crazy week in 2005 when the G8 came to town This is possibly the best novel you will read in your life full stop. Unquestionably a best from Rankin, The Naming of the Dead goes way beyond the scope of even the greatest crime thrillers to become an essential state-of-the-nation take on 21st century Britain. ![]() He has taken a momentous few days in recent British history (not just the G8 and the protests, but also the success of the Olympic bid followed a day later by the London bombings) and effortlessly interwoven the political and the criminal ![]() Rebus and Rankin are on the top of their form Once I start reading one, all else goes by the board till I have finished it They call his work crime fiction, but the adjective is superfluous. So perhaps it’s not too late after all to point out that the publication of “Go Set a Watchman” constitutes one of the epic money grabs in the modern history of American publishing. And the Rupert Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal not only excerpted the first chapter on the Friday before publication, but it also gave its readers a chance to win a signed first edition of the book.Talk about synergy! Then again, the Rupert Murdoch-owned publishing house HarperCollins announced just this week that it had sold more than 1.1 million copies in a week’s time, making it the “fastest-selling book in company history.” “Watchman” has rocketed to the top of the New York Times best-seller list, where it will surely stay for a while. Called away on family business, I was afraid I’d missed the sweet spot for commentary on the Harper Lee/“To Kill a Mockingbird”/“Go Set a Watchman” controversy - that moment right after “Watchman’s” release on July 14 when it was all anybody in literary circles could talk about. ![]() The Apple Book by Rosie Sanders5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Marginal line drawings in cross-section complete a comprehensive guide to identification and a source of inspiration for apple growers. The changes will impact climbers scaling the peak and local people who live in the shadow of it. According to two new studies published today in iScience and One Earth, the air pressure near Everest's summit is rising, making more oxygen available to breathe, and glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, leading to more meltwater. But both of those elements are changing fast.
